The Wall of Names

Imagine
your sweet brother
hacked in the head with a machete,
skull splitting easy as a banana tree.

Imagine
your brave sister
raped, infected with HIV,
body and soul broken for life.

Imagine
your strong mother
shot in the head as she tried to fight,
a hunted lioness defending her cubs.

Imagine
your gentle father
sliced in two to see if he bled
red blood like other humans, or only milk.

Imagine
your cute baby niece,
gurgling her first words and smiles,
smashed to orange pulp against a wall.

Imagine
your smart little nephew
who loved football and fanta,
stabbed in the eyes and neck.

Imagine
yourself made orphan, only child,
parents, siblings, friends dead,
you the lone survivor

somehow -
witness to this man-made nightmare,
left alone to search for bones,
items of clothing, discarded shoes
